Disappointment at Brass in the Park
Another weekend and another contest for Lochgelly. Hard on the heels of the Land O’ Burns contest the band travelled to Newtongrange for the Brass in the Park contest on 3rd September. After last weeks heroics much was expected from the band on current form. Unfortunately it was not to be as the band played well below their current standard and finished a disappointing 10th overall. For this contest the band had chosen a completely different program to that used the previous week in Troon. The band opened with the march “Goldcrest” and followed it up with the William Himes arrangement of the hymn tune “Ellacombe”. For their final item the band featured their flugelhorn player Karen Brow in the Barrie Gott number “Light Walk”.
The contest was won by the Dalmellington Band whose trombonist Derek Kirkwood also lifted the senior soloist prize for his rendition of “Rhapsody For Trombone”. Loanhead Brass Roots took the overall honours in the development section. As always at Brass in the Park the organisation was excellent. The informality of the event is also a refreshing change from the sometimes stuffy atmosphere of traditional brass band contests. With lots to see and do, excellent food and drink, and of course top quality entertainment on offer it is no wonder that this contest continues to improve every year.
