Lochgelly Band Gains Second Place at Fife Brass Band Festival

The first Fife Brass Band Festival contest took place at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline yesterday (23rd April). Glorious weather in the Kingdom saw 23 bands turn out in support of the contest which was previously known as the Carnegie Invitational. After the success of the Scottish Championships the band were hopeful of further success and so it proved with a second place finish in the 2nd section of the contest. Playing off a number 2 draw the band impressed adjudicator David Horsfield with the quality of their playing and their choice of programme. In recognition of the new name for the contest the band opened their short programme with "Festival Prelude - Ellacombe" based on the hymn tune Ellacombe. The band then followed this up with Sandy Smiths arrangement of "Chicken Run" from the movie of the same name. Changing the mood, the band slowed down the tempo by playing Philip Sparkes arrangement of the Welsh lullaby "Suo-Gan", showing off the full dynamic range of the band. For their final number the band played the Dave Brubeck piece "Blue Rondo a La Turk". This is a very challenging number and proved to be a great finisher. Musical director James Chamberlain declared himself very pleased with the way the band played.

In the overall contest Fife Champions Kingdom Brass took the Championship section honours with English visitors Easington Colliery retaining the 1st section title they won last year. The 2nd section was won by Clydebank Burgh band directed by Alan Duguid whilst Shotts St. Patricks Brass and Penicuick Silver took the honours in the 3rd and 4th sections respectively. It was a particularly good day for Alan Duguid who directed the winning performances in the Championship, 2nd and 3rd sections. The full results of all sections of the contest were as follows:-
