The band had a busy weekend just past. On Saturday we took part in the Scottish Challenge contestl held in Perth Concert Hall. We played the test piece Paganini Variations and were placed 7th in a field of 24 bands from all over Scotland, including a full representation from the 1st section. The contest was won by Clackmannan District Brass, also conducted by our conductor Paul McKelvie, to whom we offer our congratulations. No sooner had we come off stage in Perth and it was a quick jump in the cars and drive down to Newcastle so that we could listen to the best bands in the world competing at the Brass in Concert Championship. This contest regularly attracts the best brass bands in the UK and this year, the European Champions Eikanger from Norway, Fountain City Brass from the USA and Paris Brass Band from France. Unusually for a top level contest it allows bands to play a concert programme of music, showcasing their presentation as well as their musical skills. The contest is a mecca for devotees of brass band musicianship and often offers pointers to music that we might feature in our own programmes in future. A great weekend was had by all and we look forward to next year already.
