FIFE BRASS BAND FESTIVAL RESULTS

The band made a welcome return to the Fife Brass Band Festival contest held in the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline at the weekend (21st April). The band finished in sixth place out of a very competitive field of nine 1st section bands. It is a mark of how confident the band are at this level that we were disappointed with that result, having believed our performance to be worthy of maybe a couple of places higher. However that's banding for you. At the end of the day it's all up to the man in the box. Under the baton of Mark Bell the bands programme opened with Peter Grahams exciting fanfare "Summon The Dragon" featuring the cornet and trombone sections. Following this the band played a light jazzy number with Pat Methenys "Letter From Home". This was a lovely little piece that really caught the adjudicators ear and he was generous in his comments. The band moved on to feature our bass trombone player Bryan Johnson in the solo "I Wanna Be Like You" arranged by Alan Fernie. This piece originated from the Disney animated feature "The Jungle Book" and in the movie is sung by King Louie the orang utang. The band really got into the whole jungle feel with some very enthusiastic monkey noises in the opening bars. Some of us found this easier than others but I'm not saying who! The band finished their programme with the exciting "Russian Sailors Dance", a piece which demanded full concentration from the band as it wound its way up to an exciting climax. Adjudicator Paul Dalton praised the band for its efforts but also highlighted tuning and ensemble as those areas where the band perhaps need to improve. We will take his comments on board as we strive to improve for the next contest.
