The Lochgelly Band Pictured in 1900
The band pictured in 1900 in uniform. From the look of the photograph it appears as if the band have been playing at a local gala day. Gala days were often organised for the benefit of the children of the miners and many were supported by local industry. Until recently the Scottish Miners Gala still took place in Edinburgh and involved a march to the Meadows followed by a contest. To this day the childrens gala is still a prominent summer feature in many towns throughout Scotland.
